Is Crafty still the strongest free chess program that you can download
online?

Thanks for the link to the rating list! As I see, the 40/120 is not
complete. Let's wait for the results.

How about Toga 1.2.1
(http://uciengines.de/UCI-Engines/TogaII/togaii.html)? In limited
tests, I found it to be stronger than Rybka 1 Beta. But I do not find
it listed in any of the rating lists.

You are right,
the new Toga 1.2.1a is quite strong.

But even the very first Rybka 1 beta version
(= demo version) is a little bit stronger.

Have a look at Hus van Kempen's rating list (40 moves/40 min):

Indeed ... that IS free software! Based upon Fruit, so it is likely to be
quite good.

Crafty hasn't been state of the art for quite a long time, now. The
SSDF rating list is online at

http://web.telia.com/~u85924109/ssdf/list.htm

Of the engines towards the top, you can download an older, beta
version of Rybka[1] but you have to pay for the latest version. You
can download[2] a trial version of Fruit 2.2.1; some earlier versions
were free. Spike is still free[3].

I use Rybka and Crafty. Rybka is much stronger. You'll see a huge
improvement in its analysis of your games, especially the endgames.

The strongest free program
(by far the strongest!)
is RYBKA 1 Beta.

That program isn't free in the spiritual sense that Crafty and GNU Chess are
free. However, it is free to download and use, unlike the other Rybka
versions.
