In particular, I'm considering Toga, Rybka, Fritz, Crafty, Fruit, Hydra,

I've tried Rybka and Crafty w/o tablebases. Rybka seems much stronger
in the endgame, and it's higher-rated than the others you mention.

An interesting question, for which I am also looking for the answer.
Are there any test suites for endgame positions? There appear to be
some German sites dealing with the question. But alas, I am unable to
follow.
