Is there an easy way to print chess diagrams, for example on plain paper or
index cards? I would like to create a cheat-sheet stack to review before
important games. It would be great if this software allowed commentary as
well.

Chessmaster will let you print a diagram. It will print one page per
position. Commentary would have to be added after the fact.

Thanks, John and JM. Unfortunately I don't have Chessmaster. Fritz/Chessbase
do not do a very good job. Their sizing feature is very handy, but each
diagram has a header that I can't seem to get rid of ("ChessBase 9.0
Printout, Angelo DP, 9/26/2006"). Also, I can't seem to print commentary
along with the diagram.

I found a program, Diag Transfer, that does the trick quite nicely.

In CB9 you get rid of the title through File/Print/Page Setup, select the
'Diagram
title' tab and uncheck the Headline and Bottomline boxes. However, since
the
program is weak in allowing you print comments and you have found something
that works well for you, all this is irrelevant. Where did you find Diag
Transfer?

Do a control-f on the word "chess".

I decided to try to get CB to print my diagrams since all my material is in
that format, in CB databases. What a mistake. After 3 frustrating hours of
playing "read the ChessBase programmer's alleged mind" it is time for
another anti-CB rant.

This horrible, stupid, ridiculous company, which charges a premium price for
its so-so products (which I continue to purchase religiously), cannot find
the resources to provide a decent, simple, understandable interface for
printing diagrams. First of all, you can't include any moves with diagrams,
only with games. You can add text, but only where the program wants you to
add it. Second, it prints crooked -- yes, even with plain 8.5 x 11 inch
paper, which I've been using to test its print capabilities. Third, it's
impossible to size or harmonize (or distinguish) the two title and footnote
styles without a long trial and error process. Even then, I now find it
impossible to get rid of them. I click them "off" but they still print.

What a joke. One really must wonder what these people think of when they
produce upgraded versions of their product. We're on ChessBase 9 and you
still need a PhD in stupid thinking to print a simple chess diagram on a 3x5
index card without going totally insane. This must be their revenge for the
Treaty of Versailles.

Actually, I was mainly wonder what (if?) you're thinking when you buy
the upgraded versions of their product.

Angelo: ``Doctor, it hurts every time I buy a new ChessBase product.''
Doctor: ``Well don't do that, then!''

I have this (big stupid grin) weakness you see...

I developed "turf toe" about a month ago. It's a painful injury to the joint
where your big toe meets your foot. Anyway, it was almost 100% when I
decided to play tennis. That set me back a good 10 days. I was feeling
almost better on Monday so I decided to wear my loafers to my chess game.
The doctor told me specifically to wear sneakers until it was 100% better.
Guess what? I'm popping ibuprofen again.

Chessbase reminds me of Windows. They keep introducing new features without
fixing the old problems.

But even Microsoft can't reduce the functionality of software you have
installed on your computer if you don't add or delete anything else. At
least you have to make chances on your computer for M$ to mess it up
even more.

Chessbase have with Pocket Fritz (they have screwed up the database
and/or web server it connects to). But I'm told fixing it is not a
priority.

They have been aware of the problem for months now. They still advertise
the feature of the database on the Pocket Fritz page on their site:

To quote from their web site at:
http://www.chessbase.com/shop/product.asp?pid=152

"The program gives you mobile access to the ChessBase Online database
with well over two million games. There you can search for the games of
specific players, tournaments or openings. You also have online access
to a giant state-of-the-art openings book with over seven million
positions and full statistics for each of them."

Obviously updating the web site, to reflect the reduced functionality is
not a priority either.

I'm glad I use scid

http://scid.sourceforge.net/

at least if there is a problem with it I have a reasonable chance of
being able to fix it, since the source code is public.

I've only ever bought one chessbase product and I don't think I'll be
buying any more.

The situation of Microsoft stopping issuing security patches for older
versions of Windows is perhaps similar? (Certainly not identical.)

As much as I dislike M$, they have to stop somewhere. People will always
develop new viruses, so at what point should Microsoft cease development?

Perhaps that is one reason I use Solaris - Sun support their products a
lot better. I can download manuals for very old computers, I can get
security patches for old versions of the operating system. That said, I
normally run a reasonably current version of the OS.

With Chessbase, no 3rd party is developing anything to screw Pocket
Fritz up. Chessbase have done it themselves. It's also a current product
you can buy. I think on this issue Chessbase's failing to address the
issue in a timely manner is less excusable than Microsoft's decision to
release security patches.

Chessbase's attitude I find very odd.

If anyone has bought Pocket Fritz in the last year, perhaps they would
seek a refund. I've had the product 2 or 3 years, so are not in a
position to do so myself.

It would be interesting to see the result of an attempt to get a refund.
I'm almost tempted to buy a second copy and seek a refund a week later!
I think a credit card company would probably accept that as a valid
reason, if one feature of the software simply does not work, despite the
advertising saying it does.

I am going to ask on uk.legal and seek the opinion of some legal people
on this.

You have ChessBase, correct?

Open a board window and set up the position (load a game and go to
the desired move, select 'New Position' and set up the pieces manually,
etc.). Once you have what you want, select File/Print/Page setup and
set the paper size to what your index cards are, i.e. 4x6, 3x5 depending
on what you have and what your printer can handle. Then select
File/Print/Print setup, select the Print Diagram tab and adjust the diagram
size and indentation. I don't know what these values represent in inches
so you may have to play with them to get the desired result. (You also
may have to switch between portrait and landscape mode in the printer
setup.)

Finally File/Print/Print Diagram to see a preview of the diagram and select
the Print button at the top of that page to output it.

If you want commentary also, you might be better off to print to 8.5 x 11"
paper
depending on how much there is.You can insert a diagram (with Insert/Insert
diagram)
and commentary into a game's notation and select Print/Print Game and the
diagram/commentary/moves are all printed out.

Hope this is enough to get you started; ask if you have questions.

Regards,
John
