I still can hardly believe it but my chess program (
http://www.vanheusden.com/pos/ ) Pos version 1.18 reproducably wins
occasionally from GNU Chess!
Since my program uses none of the regular techniques as the Shannon
algorithm or brute force in any kind I found this to be a major milestone.
Yes, it won before from Pulchess v0.2i but now that also wins from other
software as well it starts to mean something :-)
Me being exstatic is a bit of an understatement.

GNU Chess was so intent on capturing a rook that it overlooked a mate
in one. Heh.

What was the time control in this game?

Yes, what was the time control? That was a *very* strange game. GNU
Chess isn't the strongest engine in the world but it doesn't normally
shuffle wood aimlessly like that. Its first six moves seem reasonable
but I'm totally mystified by 7... a5 and 8... Kf7. 15... b6 drops a
piece for two pawns but POS doesn't notice and GNU Chess doesn't
untrap his bishop for several moves.

This makes no sense. What's going on, Ted?

I found the reason: I was testing against a crypled version of gnu chess :-(
So, no reason to be happy at all.
Darn.

Oh, there's plenty of reason to be happy. You'd be happy if your kid
won his or her first game of chess, even if it was against another
five year old and each of them missed half a dozen checkmates on the
way.

Just keep things in proportion. :-)
