Subject: Can you help to identify this Botvinnik-Romanovsky Leningrad 1927
I am puzzled by the following game. It was in a collection from
www.ruschess.com, in with the 5th USSR Ch of 1927. Botvinnik was 16 at
the time, yet in the Ch of that year he drew with Romanovsky. In what
event was this game played?

Here is the above passage in English, in case anyone wants a
translation:

In the summer of 1927, in the chess club at the Palace of Labor, a
double-round tournament of six well-known players was held. These were
P. Romanovsky, S. Gothilf, A. Model, Y. Rokhlin, V. Ragozin and
myself.
For me the competition was of great significance, since in the
autumn of 1927 the next USSR Championship, the 5th, was due to take
place; in the event of a successful performance in the match-
tournament there was a possibility of me being included in the list of
candidates for the championship.
I conducted the tournament with great energy, losing only my match
to Romanovsky, and winning the rest. I felt splendid. I lived at the
dacha in Sestroretsk (where I spent all the time on the beach), and
twice a week I traveled to Leningrad =85

That is great stuff, Mr Kingston. I was trying to exclude the game
from the USSR Ch series and I think you have now done so!

Thanks again

Hmmm, Chessbase does not have this game at all, nor any game in
which Romanovsky beat Botvinnik. Their game from the 1927 USSR Ch was
a 47-move draw in which Romanovsky played an interesting form of
Philidor's Defense:

Checking the crosstables at the back of "Botvinnik's Best Games
1925-1941," I see one event in which Romanovsky won a game with
Botvinnik. It is listed as simply "Six-player Tournament, Leningrad."
There's no date, but its placement compared to other events makes it
1927. Romanovsky scored 9-1 (+8 -0 =3D2) to finish atop Botvinnik
(7=BD-2=BD), Model (5-5), Gottgilf (3=BD-6=BD), Ragozin and Rokhlin (2=BD-=
7=BD).
Your game being a Botvinnik loss, it is naturally not included in
the book, but I would bet it probably came from that event.

Thanks for the response, Phil.
Google always tells me that there is something seriously wrong with
the Ruschess site. I always get a warning. That's why I only look at
it on the work computer.
I may try and have a look tomorrow.

If you go back to Ruschess [I helped name that site!] and at the top right
of the screen there is an icon for questions and answer - so ask boris
yeshan your question.

i do not have cross tables for 1927 Soviet Championship, but note that
Romanovsky and Bohatirchuk shared first place. Romanovsky first won it in
1923. Botvinnik fitst won it in 1931.

web searches found:
The fifth Soviet championship was played in Moscow from 26 ix until 25 x
1927. Sixteen-years-old Botvinnik made his debut among the twenty-one
players. The youth played well in the Hall of Columns, but the real battle
went between the radiologist Bohatirchuk and bank worker Romanovsky.
Romanovsky led by one point, when the penultimate round began. He lost to
Grigoriev and Bohatirchuk caught up. The leaders played draws in the final
round. They shared the first place with 14/21, followed by Dus-Chotimirsky
and Model with 13, Botvinnik and Makogonov with 12, Nenarokov with 11,
Grigoriev with 10 and Ilyin Zhenevsky with 10 points. A match for the
championship did not take place, because Bohatirchuk had medical duties.

Here is another URL which contains the games, round by round
