Polgar and Truong change attorneys I just received notice in the mail today that Susan Polgar and Paul Truong have changed attorneys in the case Sloan vs. Truong, 07-CV-8537 pending in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. Their new attorney is Joseph J. Ortego, of the lawfirm of Nixon Peabody LLP, Jericho, Long Island, New York. I believe that this change in attorneys is related to the demand by counsel for the USCF that Truong sign a sworn affidavit stating whether he is or is not the Fake Sam Sloan. Eight days ago, four members of the board demanded that Truong resign in view of his refusal to cooperate with the investigation into the Fake Sam Sloan and his refusal to sign such a statement. The other USCF defendants to this lawsuit continue to be represented by Jeremy Brown of the law firm of Proskauer Rose LLP. I assume that the insurance company for the USCF, Chubb Corp, is paying for the new legal representation for Polgar and Truong. Sam Sloan
Why do you assume USCF's insurance company is paying for this additional attorney, given that it appears that he didn't cooperate with the original one we provided? It must cost more than having him under the same umbrella as the other respondents in your lawsuit, and I expect that Chubb wants to control their costs.
It is my understanding that the insurance carrier MUST provide them with legal counsel. Therefore, if for any reason they cannot get along with the law firm provided to them, they will be given another one. I have learned that their new legal counsel, Nixon Peabody LLP, is another one of those huge mega-lawfirms and, like Proskauer Rose, their pervious law firm, is one of the top 100 in the country. It is said to have been Richard Nixon's old law firm. I would imagine that at some point if they refuse to cooperate with anybody they will be told to find their own legal representation. Sam Sloan

It won't do them any good-- exchanging attorneys, I mean. All that will happen is that now PT will have SP's atty., and she will have his. What they need to do is, together, retain the services of an atty. like, you know, Perry Mason. (Not that guy played by Andy Griffith-- too boring.) I think Perry Mason would not only get them both off, but nail the real Fake SS, by cross-examination on the witness stand. He always made them crack under the pressure-- even Sam Sloan could not escape PM. Just have the writers alter the script so that PT is not guilty... . -- help bot

However, it seems that their prior assigned counsel wanted to know whether they were guilty or not. When they stonewalled they were dropped as a client. Now, when they stonewall before their new attorney too, I do not know what will happen next. Meanwhile, I am waiting to learn whether their new assigned counsel will request additional time to answer. Sam Sloan

I am waiting to learn if Sam Sloan thinks USCF should throw open its door, or if it will stonewall. Naturally, Sam Sloan finds these hard words to read ~ but since he spent a year saying it should on practically every other matter, then, should we take all that so seriously? I would imagine that if Sam Sloan /really/ wanted to know "who is clean and who is not" he would concur with that suggestion - and then, where would any objections be coming from? Then we would all know what will happen next. Phil Innes newsgroups cut: misc.legal, alt.chess, rec.games.chess.computer > Sam Sloan > > >
