Viswanthan Anand of India is the World Chess Champion for the year
2007. In the last game he drew with Peter Leko. He scored 9 points.
This is the second time he is becoming the world champion.

congratulations to Viswanthan Anand.

My greatest hope at the moment is that Anand can shake off the terrible
rumors now circulating that he intimidated his opponents in Mexico with
attack elephants and trained cobras.

Finally! Wonderful, he is such a nice person!

The first. The other time he was a chimp not a champ.

Bravo Anand! Great! And next year we will
witness quite a match! (Kramnik is a nice person too;
they are both mild.)

This is the first time that I used 7 exclams
in one post!!

Congrats to Ananda, but a poor performance by Leko. Going into the
last round, there could have been tension were he to have beaten Anand
(this could have meant Gelfant could catch him). Leko showed poor
professionalism in at least not try to go further and not egreeing to
such a quick draw. He owed it to his grandmaster colleagues to try
harder. As it was, as soon as their game finished, the others were
unnecessary - it was finished. If I were Gelfand I would have has words
with Leko - what de HE gain from the quick draw (more confirmation of
his 'drawness'??)

But this is the first time he is the uncontested, i.e. "real" World
Champion. Presumably to be recognized as "the 15th World Champion". Last
time he was only the FIDE knockout champ.

On that we certainly agree.

Uncontested and fairly real. But it's a bit poor to declare somebody
as World Champion right now at a tournament that doesn't include
Topalov. (I'm not saying Topalov would have won, you understand; just
that he should have been given the opportunity to play.)

Absolutely.

It's not the absence of Topalov that taints the championship, it's that he
hasn't defeated the previous champion in a match. So while Anand is
to be applauded, what we are really seeing is the devaluing of a
once meaningful title. (This seems to be FIDE's mission of late)

By contract, Kramnik has the right to a "rematch" in 2008.

That should be a wonderful match with a great purse and lots of outside
sponsorship. Now, folks, sit back and see how FIDE screws it up.
